Users needs and experience are our core.

In 2020, with the financial support of RFF Oslo , UpPacked ran a research project to acquire knowledge about different users' interactions and needs regarding the UpPacked refill system.

We want to share some of the findings here with the general public to help others who share our mission of fighting plastic pollution. Please write an email to: research@uppacked.com if you are interested in more details.


The project consisted of investigating several aspects. Some of these include:

  • How people recycle and reuse packaging.
  • Why people recycle and reuse packaging.
  • What motivates people to recycle and reuse packaging.
  • How we can apply such knowledge to UpPacked’s refill system.

With regards to this, we conducted several studies which investigated these topics. These include:

  • Observing and interviewing how people use similar self-service solutions.
  • Interviewing store staff regarding the restock process and investigating potential challenges.
  • Interviewing people who recycle at recycling stations.
  • Conducting an online survey to investigate what people say about different aspects of recycling and reusing products’ packaging.
  • Observing and interviewing how people interact with the UpPacked smart refill system and interacting with a manual refill.

Our study confirmed a common opinion that Norwegians are very eco-conscious and proved the potential of refill-based circular economy solutions.

  • 95%* "I care about environmental issues, and I'm actively trying to minimize my impact."
  • Norwegians want to be able to refill their packaging in-store. 91%* would rather reuse packaging instead of throwing them away after a single use if given a choice.
  • Over 86%* of don't see a problem in cleaning it and bringing it back the packaging to the shop to do so. Even though we see this willingness, at the moment half (50,5%)*, of respondents reuse the packaging only occasionally or never.
  • We have also tested our refill system with real users. That gave us some excellent insight, but most importantly, we have heard that they all liked using it! They found it easy and convenient to refill bottles with our technology.
